Reviving this post for the social distancing sequestering in March of 2020.
My Facebook feed just “blew up” with posts announcing school closings, social distancing protocols severe weather predictions, and State of Emergency information. There was an audible groan from moms all across the state – especially from the ones who, just last weekend, stored all the winter gear or tagged it for their upcoming consignment sale.
Never the less, there’s a storm a brewing and kiddos to entertain mid week. So here’s five ways to keep them busy – for at least a few minutes – as you brave the unknown storm together.
1. Coloring is a classic!
Clean off the kitchen or coffee table, find the box of crayons and color away. Coloring is great for all ages too. If you need to ‘expand’ the time spent on this activity, give them a challenge – ask to see their best effort for staying inside the lines or see if they can color using a pattern (like swirls or stars). No coloring books at home? That’s ok, use your printer and Google Search.
Quick Tip: Set your printer to low ink and print on both sides of the paper
2. Visit the Disney Family website for fun craft ideas.
Grab your scissors, grab your glue! Find fun Disney-inspired art and craft ideas for kids of all ages—including holiday and seasonal crafts, decorations, and more.
Quick Tip: Always keep food coloring and sprinkles in the house for food and crafting fun!
3. Pinterest IS your friend
Not sure you have everything on hand for a complex crafting project? There are a plethora of ideas on Pinterest and don’t all require a Masters Degree in Fine Arts.
- Paper Plate Crafts for Kids
- Easy Kids Crafts
- Vacation Countdown Crafts and Calendars
- Puzzles, Crafts, Time Busters – made for travel and are good ideas at home too
4. Easy Cooking and Baking Ideas
Quick Tip: Add sprinkles to EVERYTHING to make it extra fun and special!
5. Family Read Aloud Time
Your children are NEVER too old (nor too young) for family read aloud time! Join the read aloud revival – even if just for the day – and pull out your favorite book, take turns reading aloud, and enjoy some old fashion bonding time. Didn’t make it to the library? Try Audible or Kindle or Free eBooks for your smart device.
Some of my family’s favorites are:
- Around the World in 80 Days
- Heidi (believe it or not, boys especially love Heidi!!)
- Charlotte’s Web
- The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (Chronicles of Narnia, #1)
- more family read aloud favorites
Bonus
Mama’s going to need a break too…so it’s ok to pop in a video (or two) between crafts and naps.
Looking for some inspiration?
- Watch some fun Disney Destination Videos and start dreaming about your next trip to the most magical place on earth.

And when you are ready, I’m here to help you plan a ‘dream come true’ vacation!
Unexpected weather events?
What evs’! As one mom to another – you got this!
Just remember, in motherhood, we have lifelines…’phone a friend’ is totally acceptable!
