Is it almost time to pack up the car and start your magical vacation?
My family and I have driven to Walt Disney World several times over the past few years. A 16+ hour drive from New Jersey is part of the fun…right? Well, it should be. Here are a few driving tips to help your family enjoy (ahem, survive) your journey in the car.
Planning Your Drive
Map Your Route and Tentatively Plan Your Time
Before embarking on your journey, it’s essential to plan your route carefully. Add your starting and ending location addresses into your GPS or map app. Additionally, have ‘backup’ directions handy in case you travel through an area with little or no connectivity to your electronic mapping program. Consider starting your drive at midnight or really early in the morning when the kids are still in their sleep zone. However, make sure you’re refreshed and awake to ensure your family’s safety.
Flexible Scheduling
Keep your schedule flexible for both planned and unplanned stops. Restrooms, leg-stretching breaks, and, of course, Krispy Kreme doughnuts make excellent excuses for a quick pit stop.
Organizing Your Car
To keep everyone comfortable and entertained during the drive, organize your car efficiently. Pack snacks, a small cooler, pillows, and entertainment options like audiobooks, Disney podcasts, and movies. Don’t forget non-electronic choices like coloring books and word games to keep the kids engaged.
Surprises Along the Way
Adding surprises along the route can turn a mundane car journey into a memorable adventure. Consider planning surprise gifts or fun games for the family. A tradition like taking a photo at a Florida signpost, found safely inside most rest stops, can add a touch of magic to your trip.
Don’t Forget Your Magic Bands
While on the road, keep your Magic Bands with you at all times. Don’t pack them in your checked luggage, as you’ll need them for various purposes, including accessing the resort parking lot, checking in at your resort, and unlocking your room when you arrive at your Disney Resort hotel.
Driving in Florida
When driving in Florida, be prepared for toll roads. Major roads around the Walt Disney World and Lake Buena Vista area, such as Interstate 4, Highways 192, 417, and 492, all require tolls. Visit SunPass.com for more information on preordering or purchasing SunPass Transponders locally.
Driving Home Tips
As your Disney vacation comes to an end, it’s time to start planning your next adventure, whether it’s a return trip to Disney or a new destination entirely. Here are some tips for the journey home:
- Reflect on your favorite rides and attractions to create a “must-do-again” list for your next Disney visit.
- Consider what new experiences or activities you’d like to add to your vacation schedule next time.
- Plan your next non-Disney vacation by exploring your bucket list destinations.
- Use your visit to Epcot as a conversation starter about countries you’ve already visited.
- Save a special souvenir or treat for the trip home to keep the magic alive.
Start Reliving the Memories
During the drive home, you can start reliving the memories by scrapbooking. Use the ProjectLife digital app (IOS or Android) for a convenient way to organize your photos and create lasting memories. This app is especially handy if most of your photos are already on your smartphone. Add the digital prints available directly in the app to your traditional scrapbooks or create a special album just for the kids.
